Appreciation post: phone in the hall vs phone on my chest, 2 weeks, no contest
I used to fall asleep with my phone flat on my chest, screen dimmed, one more video, one more scroll. Problem was I would jerk awake at 1am with the thing still playing and a sore neck from my chin tucked down. Two weeks back I started leaving it on the hallway floor just outside my bedroom door, face down on a paperback so it does not buzz loud against the wood. It feels dumb to type out but the walk of shame back to bed after plugging it in basically resets my brain. I fall asleep maybe 20 minutes faster and I am not doom scrolling while half awake. My partner works early shifts at the hospital and she noticed I stopped checking my phone at 5am too. The phone is still in the house, still charging, I just cannot reach it from under the covers. Anyone else park theirs somewhere weird, or is the hallway thing just me?
Getting it out of reach is the whole trick, and the hallway plus a paperback is a solid setup. Adding a cheap alarm clock so you never have a reason to grab the phone in the morning helped me a ton, since the first reach of the day is what hooks you. Also try charging it overnight in airplane mode, because the buzz and screen flash are what pull you back in even when it's face down.
