Sounds like someone plugged it into a bad outlet or overloaded the circuit and now wants a scapegoat. Wedding cake batter is thick as hell and cheap mixers die on that stuff all the time, that's on the equipment not on you. If she bought a $60 mixer for a wedding cake that's her gamble, not your fault.
