Tried making sourdough with a starter I found in a thrift store jar. Guess what grew.
Picked up a mason jar at Goodwill in Eugene last Saturday, thought it'd be perfect for my starter. It turned into this weird orange slime after two days, so I guess that's a fail in the books. Anyone else ever have a thrift store jar sabotage their bake?

Tried making sourdough with a starter I found in a thrift store jar" - girl, I used to think any jar was a jar and it didn't matter, but after my own moldy pickle jar incident last spring I totally get it now. Some jars just have weird residue or bacteria hiding in the scratches even after a good wash, especially if they sat around in some stranger's basement for years. I'd rather spend a buck on a new one than risk my flour and precious starter again.

Ngl, that moldy pickle jar thing is exactly why I always rinse jars with vinegar before using them for anything food related. A dollar store jar might feel cheap, but it's sterilized and sealed, so you know there's nothing weird hiding in the glass. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather spend that buck than waste my whole batch of sourdough.

Wait, you used a starter you found in a thrift store jar? You're supposed to make your own starter.
