PSA: 3 hour cookie disaster taught me to read baking powder expiration dates

I spent last Saturday making triple batch of chocolate chip cookies for a bake sale in Austin. After 2 hours of mixing and chilling dough, they came out flat as pancakes. My husband pointed out the baking powder can I used expired in 2021. I never thought about checking freshness on something that just sits in the cabinet. Has anyone else had a whole batch ruined by old leavening agents?

My 2015 baking powder streak ended with a tray of blueberry scones that looked more like frisbees than baked goods. At least your cookies probably still tasted good, mine could've doubled as doorstops.

Baking powder doesn't really go bad, it just loses its fizz. The acid and base just stop reacting after a while. Next time test it in hot water before using it.
