Am I the only one who thinks the best bad movies are the ones that almost work?
At a watch party last Friday, this guy argued that a movie like The Room is fun because it's totally broken, but I pushed back saying a flawed gem like Birdemic hits harder when you can see the real effort failing. So which is it, do you want a total train wreck or something that's just one bad decision away from being decent?

The phrase "one bad decision away from being decent" is exactly the problem though, because that means it never actually gets there and you're just sitting there watching wasted potential for 90 minutes. The Room is great because Tommy Wiseau had zero idea what he was doing and the movie is a pure window into a strange mind, there's nothing else like it and you can't look away. Birdemic tries to be a real movie and mostly succeeds at being boring, the bad parts just feel sad instead of funny. Total train wrecks give you stuff like random spoons and "oh hi Mark" that you'll quote forever, while almost-good movies just leave you annoyed thinking about what could have been. If the goal is having a good time with friends, the broken mess wins every single time, no contest.
