Realized I was chasing off every bird in my yard by putting my feeder right next to the window. Saw a cardinal stare at me, then fly off, and it clicked.

Oh man, I read something about this once... it said birds need a clear escape route. If the feeder's on the window, they feel trapped because they can't see a safe spot to fly to next. That cardinal staring was definitely a hint. Moving it just a few feet out makes a huge difference, lets them scope things out first. It's like giving them their own little safety zone.

Honestly I did the exact same thing last year. Put my feeder right on the window suction cup, thought it would be great for photos. Tbh it just freaked them all out. They'd grab one seed and bolt. Moved it to a tree branch about ten feet away and now it's constant traffic. That cardinal was basically telling you to back off.
