Rant: People keep calling the little brown birds in my yard 'sparrows' and it's driving me nuts

I'm in suburban Ohio and for the past year I've been logging every bird that visits my feeder. I keep seeing posts where someone has a photo of a bird and just labels it 'sparrow', but half the time it's a female house finch or a juvenile song sparrow. I learned the difference by noticing the house finch has a blurry streaked chest and a thicker beak. How do you guys quickly tell them apart without a guide book?

That blurry versus sharp streak tip is great. What about their behavior at the feeder, do you notice any difference there?

I mean I've seen both act pretty much the same at my feeder honestly.

Look at the beak first, that's my rule. House finches have these thick, kinda blunt beaks perfect for seeds, while sparrows have more pointy ones. Then check the chest streaks, like you said. House finch streaks are messy and blurry, like someone smudged them, but a song sparrow has sharp, clean streaks that gather into one dark spot. Once you see that spot, you can't unsee it.
