My neighbor told me my finch feeder was causing more harm than good

The seeds were getting moldy in the tray part and the birds were getting sick from the moisture, so I switched to a tube feeder with no collecting tray and added a little dome to keep rain out; has anyone else had that kind of issue with tray feeders?

You mentioned your neighbor said the tray feeder was causing problems with moldy seeds, and I had the exact same issue. Swapping to a tube feeder with a rain dome solved all that for me too.

Did I accidentally turn my backyard into a bird germ factory?

Ever think those birds might be bringing in their own problems from other yards? I had a similar mess last spring and found out the real issue wasn't my feeder at all. Turns out the birds were picking up fungi and bacteria from a neighbor's compost pile and then perching on my feeder to shake off. The moldy seeds were just a side effect of what they already had on their feet and beaks. Maybe take a look at what's happening within a couple houses on either side of you before buying new equipment.
