TIL the hard way that the 'shortcut' on the Eagle Rock Loop is a total trap
I was hiking the Little Missouri Falls section last fall and saw a faded arrow pointing off the main trail. It led to a steep, rocky scramble that ended at a dead end with a huge, angry beehive in a hollow log. I had to backtrack almost a mile in the dark. Has anyone else found a 'secret' trail in Arkansas that just made things worse?

That arrow sounds like a cruel joke. Did you notice if the paint was actually old, or just faded to look that way? Some of those "unofficial" paths around Lake Ouachita are just old logging roads that go nowhere.

Was it really a trap or just a bad turn? Sounds like a regular bad day on a trail to me.

Honestly, that's the worst. Those faded markers are the worst kind of trail troll. I've seen a few of those around the Buffalo River that just lead to a washed-out creek bed or a cliff. It's not a bad day, it's a setup. Someone clearly marked that on purpose, and it's dangerous.
