Bought a $45 bear canister I never needed in the Sierra and it ruined my whole plan
Two summers back I did the Rae Lakes loop out of Onion Valley and let a guy at the Sacramento REI talk me into a hard sided bear can. I hauled that 2.6 pound brick for 41 miles and hated every step of it. Turns out the whole route has metal lockers at every camp, so I could have just hung my food bag or used the boxes. The can took up half my pack and I had to strap my sleeping bag outside like a dummy. What gear did you buy for a route and then find out you never needed it?
