Rant: I tracked every dollar in a paper notebook for 8 months and my bank app knew more about me than I did
For 8 months I wrote down every single purchase in a $3 spiral notebook from Walgreens, mostly because a guy at a job site in Reno swore cash only was the way. I had 214 entries by the end and felt pretty good about it until I actually added up the coffee and gas lines. Turns out I was off by almost $400 a month versus what my card statement showed, mostly because I kept forgetting the small stuff I paid for on my phone. Now I just screenshot the weekly summary and write one number in the notebook. The notebook never caught that I spend way more on Fridays than any other day, which my app flagged in like two taps. Anyone else find out their handwritten budget was basically fiction?
Did your notebook ever catch that you spend more on certain days? My buddy did the same thing for like half a year, cash only, little pad in his back pocket. He swore it was working great until his wife pulled up the online banking one night and showed him he was blowing like $60 a weekend on stuff he never wrote down, snacks, a car wash, dumb stuff from the gas station. He missed a whole gym payment too because it came out auto and he never saw it. Now he just checks the app on Sunday and jots the total. Said the handwriting part was mostly just him lying to himself in ink.
