A buddy at a poker night told me I was overcomplicating my budget and to just use the 50-30-20 split, so I tried it for 3 months and actually saved $400 more than I did with my spreadsheets.
He said 'you're tracking every penny but missing the big picture,' and after switching to that simple rule I finally stopped obsessing over coffee expenses and focused on my rent and fun money instead, has anyone else found a bare-minimum method that worked way better than their detailed system?

Swear by this myself actually. When I stopped tracking every single trip to the gas station and just made sure my rent was paid and put a flat 20% into savings first, everything else just worked out. The trick for me was being super strict about the 50% part - like I make sure my housing and bills never go over half my take home pay no matter what. Then for the fun money I literally just spend it on anything guilt free because I know the big stuff is covered. I mean maybe it's just me but having that mental "okay my needs are handled" feeling is way better than stressing over a $5 coffee. Might be worth putting your savings on autopilot too so you literally can't forget the 20% before you blow it on something dumb.

Did you ever have a friend who just had the worst luck with this kind of thing? My buddy Mike tried a similar system but he kept messing up the 50% part because he lived in a pricey area and his rent was just too high. He'd always tell me "I got the savings part down but my needs are eating everything else up." He finally moved to a cheaper place across town, and honestly it was like a switch flipped for him. Now he's the one telling everyone to just be realistic about that 50% rule from the start, or you're setting yourself up for frustration. I think your point about autopilot savings is key too, Mike's problem was he'd forget to transfer the money on payday and then it was gone.
