That one time a customer showed me a trick with a zip tie that saved me hours

I had a guy bring in a 2005 Honda Civic last month with a rattle that was driving him nuts. I spent 2 hours poking around the engine bay thinking it was a heat shield or something loose. He came back from the waiting room and just pointed at a loose wire harness clip near the intake. He said "grab a zip tie and run it through that bracket, it'll hold forever." Took me all of 30 seconds to fix and the rattle was gone. Has anyone else had a customer teach them something surprisingly useful like that?

Honestly, customers notice stuff we overlook because they live with it every day.

My buddy Mike had a similar thing happen at his shop last winter. A lady came in with a Subaru that had a bad vibration at highway speeds, he had already sold her new tires and an alignment. She came back a week later and showed him a penny stuck in the wheel balancing weights, said she found it when she was cleaning the wheels at home. He felt like an idiot but it was a good reminder to check the obvious stuff first, customers can spot things we get blind to.

That Subaru owner probably saved herself hundreds chasing that vibration.
