Showerthought: That old timer at the NAPA store made me rethink torque specs

I used to just crank down drain plugs and call it good. Then last Tuesday this retired mechanic at the NAPA on Main Street overheard me complaining about a stripped oil pan. He said 'son, torque is about expansion, not tightness.' Took me a minute, but after he explained how aluminum pans swell with heat, it clicked. Now I actually use my torque wrench on oil changes. Anyone else learn the hard way that tighter isn't always better?

I read an article from a materials engineer once who said most people overtighten by at least 30 percent because they ignore thermal expansion in aluminum parts. That NAPA guy gave you the real truth.

Hold up, I gotta push back on that a bit. In my experience, the factory torque spec already accounts for the thermal expansion, so following it to the letter usually gives you a solid joint without stripping anything.
