Old diesel tech's warning about oil analysis made me pull a customer's engine today

I had a long talk with a retired fleet mechanic named Ray at a parts counter in Tacoma last Friday. He said I was being lazy relying only on the manufacturer's oil change interval for a 2018 F-250 that tows a horse trailer daily. He told me to actually send a sample to Blackstone Labs and read the wear metals, not just glance at the viscosity. When I did that for a customer's truck, the iron count was triple normal and we found a cracked piston ring before it grenaded. That $35 test just saved that guy from a $6,800 rebuild, and now I'm doing it on every heavy-duty truck that comes my way. Has anyone else had a surprise like that show up in an oil report, or do you mostly trust the mileage sticker too?

Hang on to the idea that a $35 test always saves you thousands, but it's not that simple every time. I've had a few reports come back totally clean and then the engine still had issues a month later, and other times the metals were high but the engine ran fine for years after. That iron spike is a great heads-up, but it's just a snapshot, not a crystal ball, especially if the sample was taken during a cold idle or right after a long haul. Still, I'd rather spend the 35 bucks and maybe look dumb than miss a cracked liner, so keep sampling but don't treat it like gospel.
