Am I the only one who learned to set ignition timing by ear?

When I was starting out, we would listen for the engine ping and turn the distributor by hand. It took practice to get it just right without any tools. Now, with computer controls, you just hook up a scanner and follow the steps. I kind of miss the hands-on skill and the pride in doing it yourself.

Honestly, you should still know the old way. Had a scan tool fail on me once and being able to tune it by sound got the truck home.

Nah, I totally get the nostalgia, but I'm on the other side. I love how precise it is now with a scan tool reading live data. You eliminate all that guesswork and protect the engine from hidden detonation. For me, that's a way better kind of skill.

Both ways take real skill.
