Is the $40 razor blade trick for removing old decals worth it, or is heat still king?

So I had this 2012 Silverado in the shop last Tuesday with 8 year old pinstripe decals baked on by Texas sun. Tried the heat gun and adhesive wheel route like always, took me almost 3 hours and still left ghosting. Out of frustration I grabbed a fresh razor blade and a plastic scraper, basically used the blade to lift a corner then the scraper to push. Finished both doors in 45 minutes. No ghosting. But I'm worried about scratching clear coat on softer paints, especially newer waterborne stuff. I've seen guys swear by heat only, and others say razor blades are lazy and dangerous. I'm leaning toward doing a test spot on a junk hood next time. Anyone else tried this and had it bite them later, or am I onto something? What's your go-to for stubborn vinyl?

Blade to lift the edge then plastic scraper is the only way my shop does it now, heat just melts the vinyl into a gooey mess. Tested it on a buddy's fresh Toyota paint and zero scratches, just keep the blade almost flat and you're golden.
