Choosing to weld a quarter panel instead of replacing it on a '98 Civic

Most guys in my shop said a full replacement was the only way, but I welded in a section and it's held solid for over a year now. Anyone else have a good result with a repair like that on an older car?

What kind of metal did you use for the patch? I did the same thing on my old Integra with some 20 gauge sheet, butt welded it in. As long as the rust is all cut out and you seal it right, it'll last longer than the rest of the car.

Hell yeah it works. Did the same thing on my 96 Accord. Cut out all the bad metal, used a 22 gauge patch like @ray_campbell46 mentioned. The trick is getting a clean fit before you weld. Sealed it with epoxy primer and good undercoat. That repair is still solid three years later. People just like to replace stuff now.

Seriously doubt a 98 Civic is worth that much effort.
