I called those James Webb galaxy photos fake until a guy at the Tucson star party walked me through the raw data
Honestly I thought the first JWST deep field was way too colorful to be real, like someone cranked the saturation in Photoshop. Then at a star party outside Tucson last fall, an amateur astrophotographer named Dale pulled up the actual FITS files on his laptop and showed me each filter was just a different infrared band, and the colors were just labels humans picked so we could tell them apart. Ngl, watching him stack 40 separate exposures into one image and seeing the same smudges appear in every single frame is what finally sold me. Now I get annoyed when people share those pics and call them fake without ever looking at the data. Has anyone else had a moment where seeing the raw files changed how you look at processed astro photos?
