My grandma's stories about meeting people at the bus stop make me think we've lost something

Why do we act like texting is better than the real chats we had before screens took over?

Exactly, it's the LOSS of accidental connection that kills me. @robert582 texting about the weather is efficient, but you miss the neighbor's weird garden gnome or the way their face lights up telling a story. Screens let us edit every word until the messy, human surprise is gone. We traded those random bus stop moments for total control and got a much lonelier deal.

Talked to the cashier at the hardware store for five minutes yesterday about sink strainers. Felt weirdly good just shooting the breeze with a stranger. Made me realize how much I default to just getting my stuff and leaving. You're right, @claire_gibson, those tiny unplanned chats are like social glue. That cashier told me a funny story about his dog, and it just made the whole errand feel less like a chore.

Man, I'm guilty of this too. I'll text my neighbor a whole conversation about the weather instead of just leaning over the fence. It's easier, but it feels kinda empty.
