Just realized I had to choose between a full refund or store credit for a broken tool from the Portland hardware store.
The drill press I bought had a faulty motor after two uses. They offered me $200 back in cash or $250 in credit toward anything in the shop. I took the credit and got a better sander, but now I'm wondering if having the cash would've been smarter for my budget. What would you have picked in that spot?

That extra $50 in credit is a classic trap. I always fall for it at the garden center, taking the store voucher for more plants instead of cash for groceries. They get you to spend more money in their ecosystem. You probably walked out with a sander that cost over $250, right? The store wins because you're still locked in, and your budget for other things takes the hit.

Ever think that voucher is just a nicer looking bill? Nora_park is right, it's not a deal, it's a chore to spend more. I used to grab the credit too, but now I see it just makes me buy things I wasn't even planning on.

Used to see that credit as free money. Then I realized it's not a discount, it's a leash. You're right, they lock you into spending more in their store. Changed my view when I needed groceries but bought tools instead, just to use the voucher. Now I always take the cash and walk away.
