Heard a guy at the auto shop say he changes his oil based on smell, not miles
Was waiting on tires in Reno and this mechanic told me he sniffs the dipstick and if it smells burnt he changes it, no matter what the sticker says. Made me wonder how many of my own habits are just guesses I never questioned. So what's one thing you do purely by feel instead of following the actual rule?
Wash my jeans maybe twice a year whether they need it or not. My wife keeps a little chart on the fridge of when things are supposed to get cleaned and I just ignore it completely. The smell test is actually science though, that guy knows what he's doing. Burnt oil smells like burnt oil and you can't fake that with a sticker. Meanwhile I once ran a lawnmower three summers without changing anything because it still started on the first pull. Sometimes the machine tells you what it needs and the manual is just a suggestion.
