The Roman coin I almost walked past at Porta Nolana in Naples
I was on a tour at the old market site near Porta Nolana and this vendor had a tray of loose bronze coins, not the nice displayed ones. I almost ignored it, but my guide said the patina can hide the mint mark, and sure enough that little worn piece had a Constantinople stamp from 330 CE. It made me start checking every tray edge piece, not just the shiny stuff. Has anyone else found something valuable in the junk pile at a dig or flea market?

Man, that feeling of almost walking right past something good is so real. I did the same thing at a flea market in Athens where a guy had a shoebox of dirty old coins and I dug through the bottom layer and pulled out a silver piece that turned out to be worth way more than the 5 euros he wanted. My hands were literally shaking because I was sure he'd figure out I found something. It kills me thinking about all the trays I skipped over the years because everything looked like junk at first glance. Good on your guide for knowing the patina trick, that little tip probably saved you from a huge miss.
