Switched from eyeballing site maps to a grid sheet after the dig at Fort Vancouver
I used to sketch trench layouts freehand in my field notebook. Last month at Fort Vancouver, a volunteer named Ray showed me his 1 meter grid sheet and my rough sketch had two units overlapping by almost half a meter. How do you all keep track of units across a site this big?
Try marking unit corners with a cheap GPS app before you dig. Overlaps like yours usually come from measuring off different reference points each time, not from sloppy sketching. One shared starting pin for the whole site fixes most of it.
