Showerthought: I used to dig with a garden trowel until a museum volunteer handed me a 4 inch pointing trowel
For two field seasons at a site outside Tucson I was scraping with whatever was in my garage and wondering why my unit walls looked so rough. Last spring a volunteer named Dana handed me a worn 4 inch pointing trowel and in one afternoon my floor was flat enough to photograph. Anyone else have a tiny tool change that made their dirt work look totally different?

How much of that difference came down to the trowel being worn in versus just being the right size for your hand? A broken-in pointing trowel has a softer edge that bites the dirt differently, and a new one straight out of the package can feel like a totally different tool. Curious if Dana's trowel was actually old and rounded or if it was just the shape that clicked for you.

Doesn't the shape of the blade matter way more than how broken in it is? Honestly a worn edge just means less trowel left to cut with, and a fresh one bites clean if you know how to hold it.
