Showerthought: I picked a trowel over a shovel at a dig near Tucson and it cost me half a day
Two summers back I had to pick between a flat trowel and a small shovel to peel back a layer at a site outside Tucson. I grabbed the shovel because it felt faster, and I nicked the edge of a buried pot within the first 20 minutes. The field lead just looked at me and said, "You dig with a trowel, you scrape with a shovel." I spent the next 4 hours mapping the damage and writing it up while everyone else kept going. Anyone else learn the hard way that the slow tool is usually the right one?
