Not convinced the Roman dodecahedron was a measuring tool

Last week I read another article pushing the theory that those bronze dodecahedrons were for surveying or calculating distances. But I held one at the British Museum 3 years ago, and the holes are too irregular for precision work. Has anyone actually tested one against a known measurement standard?

Irregular holes would still work fine for rough field measuring.
