Just realized my $85 trowel outlasted three of my fancy digging tools
Back when I started volunteering at a dig outside Tucson in 2019, I thought I needed the whole pricey kit, so I spent $85 on a stainless trowel and about $40 on a cheap knockoff as a backup. The knockoff bent on the second weekend, and the fancy multi-tool I bought for $60 snapped its blade in hard caliche soil. That $85 trowel is still the one I grab first, and it has been through maybe 200 hours of screening and scraping since then. My advisor at the time told me a trowel is the one thing worth real money, and she was not wrong. I still see new folks at our local society meetings showing up with $200 tool bundles, and half of it never leaves the bag. What is the one piece of gear you actually wore out instead of losing?
