I finally visited that local cave system people always post about and it was actually worth the hype

I live near Mammoth Cave in Kentucky and always saw people sharing pics of the formations online, but I figured it was just filtered shots making it look cool. Last month my cousin dragged me on a tour and I gotta say I was dead wrong. The way the rock layers tell time through those millions of years of sediment is wild in person. Our guide pointed out how you can see ancient sea creature fossils just sitting in the walls plain as day. It got me thinking about how much stuff is still buried out there that we haven't even touched yet. Has anyone else had a spot they were skeptical about turn out to be legit after you finally checked it out in person?

i read somewhere that theres actually still new cave systems being discovered all the time because the technology for mapping underground keeps getting better and cheaper. the guide at the place you went probably mentioned how they find new passages by following water flow or something like that. its crazy to think about how much of the stuff below our feet is just sitting there waiting for someone to stumble on it. i remember hearing about this one guy who found a whole new section of a cave in mexico just by crawling through a crack that looked too small but he went for it anyway. makes me wonder how many fossils and formations are hidden in places nobody has ever looked yet.
