Watched a crew top a red oak at 10am and the wound is already cracking 6 months later
Drove past a job site off Route 9 near Poughkeepsie back in April and the crew had just lopped the main leader off a mature red oak with a pole saw. Saw the same tree last week on a callback and the cut face is split down the middle about 4 inches deep, black stain running all down the bark. I get it, topping is faster than rigging three leaders down, but that tree is going to rot from the inside out before anyone notices. Anyone else seeing this pattern where the money saved up front gets spent on removal in 5 to 7 years?

Six months and it's already splitting is actually fast for oak. Around here you usually see the cracks show up in year two and that black staining is the giveaway, armillaria moving in through the open wound. The real killer though is the decay you cant see, the heartwood goes punky way before there's any external sign, and then one ice storm takes the whole crown off at the cut. That callback in 5 to 7 years isn't even the worst case, sometimes its the homeowner's insurance calling you after a limb lands on the roof.
