The certified arborist in Tulsa who told me to quit flush cutting my oaks
I was helping a buddy clear storm damage off his lot near Tulsa last spring when a certified arborist pulled up and watched me flush cut a broken oak limb. He walked over, grabbed my handsaw, and showed me the branch collar, said cutting flat against the trunk was basically inviting rot in. I'd been doing it that way for close to 10 years, so my face got pretty hot, but he was right, and the wound on that first clean cut callused over way faster. Now I leave that little bump every single time, and I can spot a bad flush cut from across the yard. How did you all learn about the collar, did a class teach you or did someone just call you out on the job?
