Said yes to rigging a leaner over a shed in Des Moines, and the hinge cut went sideways, so is it on me or the guy who set the pull line?
Back in June I was doing a removal for a homeowner off Grand Ave in Des Moines, a box elder leaning hard toward his shed, and I figured I'd do a simple hinge cut, notch it, and let the rope guy take it. Rope guy was the homeowner's buddy, and he swore he'd pulled hundreds of these, so I trusted him and didn't walk the line myself. When the tree started going I heard the crack and it went 15 degrees left of where I aimed, brushed the shed roof, and punched a hole the size of a dinner plate in the corner. I stopped the job, tied off what was left, and gave the guy two options: I cover the roof patch out of pocket or we do a thinner and stand down. He picked the patch, I paid $340 for the shingles and my helper and I fixed it that Saturday. Here's my debate for you all: should the sawyer own the outcome when someone else set the pull line, or is the rope guy responsible once the rigging is his? I'll say I should have checked the anchor and the angle before I touched the chain, but the guy had told me he knew what he was doing. Where do you all draw that line, do you ever cut for someone whose rigging you didn't inspect?
