Noticed the saplings in the new subdivision are way too close to the houses

I was walking by the construction site and saw them putting in young maples right by the foundations. In my line of work, I've seen what tree roots can do to roofs and walls over time. Is there a general rule for how far trees should be from buildings, or does it depend on the tree type?

Tree roots? Our basement wall shifted from a maple tree.

Maple roots can spread 30 feet and still cause problems.
