Just convinced a client to avoid topping their cherry tree
Client was set on a bad prune that would hurt the tree. We went with a light clean-out instead and it feels right.

That mention of a bad prune hits home for me. Last summer, my neighbor cut his oak tree back to stubs, thinking it would grow faster. I told him it stresses the tree and causes weak branches, but he did it anyway. Now the tree is covered in water sprouts and looks terrible. It's a shame because it was healthy before. Glad your client listened to better advice, do you see a lot of people stuck on bad pruning methods?

Eh idk if water sprouts are that bad though... like sure it looks messy but the tree's still alive right? Maybe it'll just grow out of it.

Honestly though, is it really a big deal? Trees are tough, they'll probably be fine.
