I blew off air spading for years until a job in Sacramento changed my mind
A client in Sacramento had a 60 year old valley oak with root flare buried about 8 inches under turf and I figured a hand trowel and some patience would do the same job. Then the ISA study guide for the certified arborist exam listed air excavation as the least injurious way to expose structural roots, and I looked up the compaction numbers on our clay soil here. I rented a pneumatic spade for $180 a day and cleared that flare in two hours with zero gouges on the buttress roots. My hand dug holes on two other jobs that same week took 45 minutes each and left me sore for days. Anybody using a hydro wand instead, or does air still win on dry clay?
