That guy at the camera swap meet in Tacoma gave me a real warning

Last month I was at the Tacoma Dome swap meet, and this older fellow with a beat-up Pentax K1000 told me to stop buying expired film from one specific vendor. He said he'd shot 12 rolls from the same source and every single one came back with weird color shifts and brittle backing paper. I laughed it off until I developed my own batch on Sunday, and sure enough, three rolls were ruined. Has anyone else run into this, or is there a way to test expired stock before you commit money to it?
