A darkroom regular in Des Moines said my fixer was shot, and my negatives stopped staining
I had been reusing the same batch of fixer for about 4 months, just topping it off when the level dropped, and my prints kept coming out with brown streaks along the edges. A guy named Walt at my local camera club in Des Moines looked at one of my sheets and asked me when I last mixed fresh fixer, and I admitted I honestly could not remember. He said to stop guessing with the clearing test and just mix a new batch every 8 rolls, which felt wasteful to me at first. Two weeks later my negatives came out clean, no stains at all. How often do you all dump your fixer, and do you bother with the clip test or just go by the roll count?
Did you ever read that Kodak tech pub where they say fixer capacity depends on how much silver builds up, not just roll count? My local shop guy told me the clip test still works but only if you test right before you're about to dump it anyway.
