That elderly man at the fabric store corrected my stitch counting

Last Tuesday at JoAnn's in Portland, this guy in his 80s watched me rip out a seam for the third time. He said, "You're counting thread loops, not stitch marks, that's your issue." Took me ten minutes to realize he was right. My cross-stitch rows finally lined up after 5 tries. Has anyone else gotten random advice from strangers that actually fixed a long-running problem?

Thread loops, not stitch marks"... that is wild. I've been cross-stitching for like 15 years and I never once thought about the difference. My grandma taught me and she always said "count the holes" but I just assumed she meant the visible bumps. I ripped out a whole border last Christmas because of this exact thing. Rows kept shifting by half a stitch and I blamed the fabric. This old guy just casually dropped a nuclear truth bomb on you and walked away? Unreal.
