Pro tip: Tried a cold water wash on my wool sweater and it turned into a child's size

I've been hand washing my wool sweaters for years because everyone says hot water equals disaster. Last week I got lazy and tossed a size large merino crew into the machine on cold with a gentle cycle, figuring worst case it would just pill up. Pulled it out and it fits my 10 year old nephew now. The tag said cold wash but the real killer was the agitation, not the temperature. I learned that wool fibers have little scales that lock together when they rub, so even cold water can felt the crap out of a sweater if the drum moves it around. A friend who knits told me to always use a mesh bag and zero spin. I still hand wash my good stuff but now I get why cold alone is not a magic fix. Anyone else wreck a favorite piece by trusting the tag instead of the process?
