My dad, a retired machinist, gets furious when he sees people forcing a hand plane against the grain.
He grabbed my wrist last weekend and said, 'You're fighting the wood, not working with it,' and showed me how a single light pass WITH the grain on a scrap of maple leaves a surface smoother than any sandpaper could.

Man, my dad caught me doing that once and I felt so dumb.

My dad walked in on me trying to fix the sink with a butter knife last year. I just owned up to it and asked him to show me the right way. We went to the hardware store that afternoon and he bought me a basic tool set. It felt less dumb once I was actually learning something.
