Had to choose between vinyl and a cassette deck for my basement setup
I was trying to build a little analog listening corner in my basement last month and hit a wall with my budget. I had about $150 to spend and couldn't decide between a decent used turntable or a nice cassette deck with some tapes. Vinyl sounds warmer and I love the ritual of flipping records, but cassettes are cheaper to find at thrift stores and I already had a box of old mix tapes from high school. I went with the turntable and a few cheap LPs from a shop near downtown. Honestly the first week I kept wishing I had gone for tapes because cleaning vinyl is a hassle and my basement has some dust issues. But now after three weeks I'm glad I stuck with records because the sound fills the room in a way cassettes never did. What did you guys pick when you had a similar choice? Any regrets?

Did your turntable come with a dust cover or did you have to buy one separate?

Yo honestly I feel like dust covers are lowkey overrated if you actually use your turntable regularly. Everyone focuses on keeping dust off the vinyl but nobody talks about how a hinged cover can actually mess with your sound by reflecting vibrations back down onto the platter. I stopped using mine after I noticed some weird feedback on loud passages. Plus they always get scratched up and look trashy after a year. Just get a microfiber cloth and dust the needle before each play instead.

My buddy runs a repair shop and he says the same thing about vibration issues with those plastic covers on the lower end tables. It reminds me of how people obsess over the wrong details in everything these days. Like how everyone buys those expensive protective phone cases but then leaves their car door unlocked at the gas station. We focus on the obvious stuff we can see and touch while the real problems are hiding in plain sight. The cover might keep a few specs of dust away but if it's messing with your needle tracking on loud dynamics, you're basically just protecting the wrong thing.
