Dropped $45 on a broad nib fountain pen and I mangled every journal page until a guy in Austin told me one thing
I was pressing down like a ballpoint and scratching up all my entries until a clerk at a pen shop on South Congress said to just rest the nib and let it glide, and now my evening writing feels calm instead of angry, so does anyone else here have a tip for making lettering look less shaky?
Wait, did he really tell you to just rest the nib and glide? Because that is only half the fix. The other half is how you hold the pen itself. If your grip is tight and your fingers are doing all the work, your letters will still shake no matter how light you press. You want your fingers loose and let your whole forearm and shoulder move the pen, not just your wrist. Also people forget that fountain pens write best when the nib is angled up a bit, so if you are holding it straight up and down like a ballpoint, that scratchy feeling comes back fast. Try writing bigger for a week too, small shaky letters always look worse than big loose ones. Give your hand time to unlearn the death grip and the smooth lines will come.
