Ran Cat5e for a new keypad and the old panel started beeping at 3am
Swapped in a longer run for a client in Mesa last Tuesday and figured the beeping was just a low battery, but it turned out the new cable was picking up noise from the AC line right next to it. Has anyone else had a keypad run cause weird panel faults like that, or did I just get unlucky with where I drilled?
I used to roll my eyes when guys blamed cable routing for panel faults. Figured it was always a battery or a bad board. Then I ran a keypad line past a Romex bundle in a closet and got the same thing, panel chirping at weird hours for no reason. Moved the run six inches away and twisted the pair better and it stopped cold. So you didn't get unlucky, that AC line next to your Cat5e will absolutely mess with a panel if the shield or twist is off. Keep it away from the mains and you should be fine.
