A bank job in Cleveland made me stop trusting my own eyes on panel wiring

Last month I was doing a routine swap at a Huntington branch downtown, old DSC panel out, new one in. I checked my wire map twice, everything looked right, but the dialer kept kicking into trouble mode. Turns out I had a ground loop from a wire that looked fine on the outside but was corroded inside the jacket, never caught it with a meter because I was too busy eyeballing the colors. A senior tech from the commercial side happened to walk by, pulled out his toner and traced every loop in about ten minutes flat. He said he stopped trusting visual checks five years ago after a similar false alarm at a school in Parma, and that stuck with me. Now I tone every single zone before I button up a panel, even on basic residential jobs. It adds maybe twenty minutes to a service call, but it saved me from a callback on a bank vault door sensor already. Anyone else had a hidden corrosion issue that made you change your routine too?

Yeah the hidden corrosion thing is real, that toner habit pays off every time.
