The lineman on my hangar floor bet me $20 I couldn't safety-wire a whole panel blindfolded, and the twist was wild
I took that bet in hangar 3 at a small field outside Wichita last Friday, mostly out of pride, and ended up with six perfect twists on one side and a birdcage tangle on the other that took 40 minutes to pick apart. Turns out my fingers follow the wire fine but my brain panics at the last hole every time, so I keep a bent-tip pair of safety wire pliers on the cart now instead of the straight ones. Does anyone else have one dumb grip habit that only shows up when someone is watching you work?
That bit about your brain panicking at the last hole got me, because a buddy of mine has the exact same thing. He's been twisting wire for years, fast as anyone, but the second the shop lead stands behind him he cross-threads the nut on the first hole every time. Last month he did a whole hydraulic line run, clean as you like, then the lead walked up and he dropped his pliers twice and put the pigtail on the wrong side. He swears it's the quiet breathing behind him. Now he just talks out loud to himself while he works, narrating the whole thing, and the lead thinks he's nuts but it keeps his hands steady. Funny how the eyes on you change what your fingers do.
