Static wicks seemed pointless until my radio crackled nonstop.

I heard a pilot say his old Cessna would build up enough static to give you a real jolt touching the door. That charge has to go somewhere, and it loves to scream through your radio. Those little wicks just let it bleed off quietly instead.

Seriously, a jolt from the door sounds dangerous. If static can shock you, no wonder it screams through the radio. Those wicks are clearly not just for show.
