Showerthought: my brother's job at the Seattle port got half its paperwork taken over by a model last month
My brother works the evening shift at the Port of Seattle doing customs paperwork and last month his boss sat the whole team down and told them a new AI tool would start pulling data off shipping manifests for them. He said he was nervous for about a week, then he realized the tool does the boring copying part and he still has to catch when an item code looks off. I asked if anyone got cut and he said no, but two temp spots never got refilled. He also said the tool keeps misreading handwritten notes on the paper forms, so someone still has to fix about 15 of those a night. Now he's trying to figure out if he should learn how to check the model's output or just keep his head down and hope his role stays. Has anyone here worked at a place where this kind of rollout happened and it was more of a slow shift than a big cut? I want to give him real advice and not just tell him it'll be fine.
