Pro tip: the self-checkout cameras at my Kroger in Cleveland are doing way more than I assumed
I was at the Kroger on Lorain Ave in Cleveland last Tuesday and noticed a little screen above the self-checkout that I'd never really looked at before. It wasn't showing my total, it was showing a wireframe of my body with green boxes around what I was scanning. The clerk told me it's running some kind of vision model that flags when an item goes in the bag without a scan, and it does it in under a second per item. I stood there for a minute just watching the boxes track my hands, and honestly it was kind of impressive and kind of creepy at the same time. She said the store went from around 40 shrink incidents a week to single digits after it went live in January. Makes me wonder how many other things in my normal week are quietly running a model on me. Has anyone else noticed these camera screens and actually asked an employee what they do?
Asked a clerk at my local store about the same setup last month and she gave me a straight answer, which helped a lot. She told me the cameras only flag items that skip the scan and that nobody sits there watching live video, it just pulls up a clip if something gets marked. I watched the screen for a minute after that and it was actually kind of calming once I knew what it was doing. My advice is just walk up and ask, most of the workers seem happy to explain it because they deal with the same questions all day.
