PSA: figuring out why my afternoon coffee tasted bitter took me 6 weeks and it was the water
I have been drinking coffee after 2pm for about 2 years now and always thought the bitter taste in my late afternoon cup was just me burning the beans. I tried 4 different grinders, dropped my brew temp from 205 to 195, and even started measuring my beans with a scale instead of a scoop. Nothing worked, and I was close to blaming my cheap drip machine. Last week a barista at the shop near my office asked what I use for water and I said tap. She told me our city water runs hard and that was probably the issue. I switched to a $3 jug of filtered water from the store and the bitterness was gone the very next day. Has anyone else found out their tap water was the real problem the whole time?
Wait, a $3 jug of water fixed it overnight? That is wild. I always figured bitter coffee meant I was doing something wrong with the beans or the machine, not the water coming out of my own sink.
