The 3 AM red light bulb moment about checking my own oven temp
I was up late baking those frozen cookie dough squares from Aldi and noticed the package said bake at 350 for 12 minutes. My cookies kept coming out raw in the middle after 15 minutes, so I grabbed an old analog thermometer I had sitting in the drawer. It read 290 after the oven said it was preheated to 350, so I tested it in a glass of boiling water and it was off by 20 degrees. That little $6 thermometer from a hardware store in Evanston just exposed that I've been underbaking everything for months, anyone else trust their oven dial way too long?
Grabbed my own thermometer last week after the same thing with those Aldi squares. Turns out my oven was running 30 degrees hot, so my chicken was always dry and my cookies were bricks. That little dial lied to me for a full year, I was ready to blame the recipes. Now I check the temp every few months with a cheap probe and honestly it should be mandatory for anyone who bakes.
